We know that many FMB members are concerned about what the future pipeline of skilled workers looks like for construction.

As business owners with a strong sense of pride and legacy, you are often front and centre of investing time and energy into helping apprentices train and develop.

The Economy Minister for Northern Ireland, Dr Caoimhe Archibald, has launched a three-year Apprenticeship Action Plan.

The plan sets out three broad themes:

  • Improve – The plan will implement change to make the apprentice system more effective, successful, and innovative, so it can meet the needs of both apprentices and employers.
  • Grow – increase the number of employers and apprentices able to benefit from enhanced skills provision.
  • Include – a policy of inclusion will be fostered to make sure all sectors of society can thrive within the apprenticeship system, including those that have previously been marginalised in employment.

It’s time to have your say

The plan is not without its challenges, so we’re planning to respond to provide feedback on what our members have to say. We would really like to hear your experiences and suggestions for improving the existing system, so please get in touch.

Our key points of action will focus on:

  • What support can be given to employers to assist apprentices?
  • How can we improve the route into the industry and find more committed new staff?
  • How can we promote the apprenticeship route at younger ages to engage with the next generation?
  • What new innovations can help the industry recruit and retain staff?

We would love to hear your views and you can email me at: gavinmcguire@fmb.org.uk
