This July marks 85 years since a group of builders came together to create what would become the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

Since 1941, the building industry has changed beyond recognition. Construction methods, materials, regulations and customer expectations have all evolved. But through every decade, generations of small and medium sized (SME) building companies have kept doing what they do best: getting on with the job. Building the homes people live in, the workplaces they work in, and the community buildings that hold everyday life together.

Throughout that time, we've worked alongside our members, providing practical business support, championing higher standards and giving SME builders a stronger voice on the issues that matter to their businesses.

Our 85th anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on where we've come from, celebrate the achievements of our members, and look ahead to the future of the construction industry.

A journey through FMB history

From rebuilding blitzed homes after the Second World War to standing alongside members through every recession, regulation change and industry shift since, our history tells the story of British building itself.

Here are some of the milestones along the way:

Supporting builders today

While the industry has changed, our focus remains the same: helping professional builders succeed.

Today we support members through every stage of running a building business, including:

  • Business advice and expert helplines
  • Contracts and legal support
  • Health and safety guidance
  • Technical information and training
  • Marketing support and Find a Builder
  • Representing builders' interests with governments across the UK.

As a member organisation, we're continually evolving our support to help builders respond to the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

Looking ahead

The construction industry continues to evolve, bringing new opportunities alongside new challenges.

We'll continue working with our members and industry partners to raise standards, improve skills, support business growth and champion the interests of SME builders across the UK.

Right now, we're pushing for a national licensing scheme through our Licence to Build campaign — raising standards for the next 85 years, protecting homeowners and backing builders who already do the job properly.

As we celebrate 85 years, we're also looking forward to the years ahead and continuing to support the next generation of Master Builders.
