Just like all of the winners announced at our Scotland Master Builder Awards ceremony on 6 June, I was hoping for some Scottish success at the awards finals in Manchester. It was a pleasure to welcome our Scottish finalists to Manchester: many of whom were in kilts or in tartan.
The judging for the finals is when the winners from the devolved nations and English regions, compete against each other for the ultimate accolades. When the winners were announced during the finals ceremony, there was strong support and applause from all of our Scottish finalists. It was great to see and hear this. My congratulations to Spey Building & Joinery, Martin Sneddon and Liam Adamson of Haldane Construction Services on their success in Manchester.
Clients meet members in Edinburgh
Over the first weekend of October, the Homebuilding and Renovating Show took place at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh. The FMB had a stand and with excellent support from members, we spent the weekend providing guidance to clients on how to find and work with good building contractors. Most of the delegates visiting the stand or our ‘Ask the Builder’ advice centre being homeowners about to embark on a renovation, extension, or refurbishment project.
Matthew Campbell, Director of M W Campbell Building & Property Maintenance said:
'This was the first time I have helped the FMB at an exhibition. Whilst I was happy to pick up a lot of leads local to where I’m based in Glasgow, I met clients from right across Scotland. So I imagine many members will pick up enquiries from the people I and other members spent time with at the exhibition.'
My thanks Matthew and his colleague Lee, Colin McInnes, Pam Wilson, Gary Finnie, Alastair Raitt, and Josh Park who all gave up some or all their weekend to help me and my colleague Carolyn Frank promote the FMB.

Preparing for Parliament
On 12 November 2025 we will be hosting our inaugural FMB reception at the Scottish Parliament.
Here we will share our newly published Manifesto, ‘Growth from the Ground Up: The Builders’ Manifesto for Scotland 2026’, setting out the key priorities for Micro and SME builders over the next 5 years. Earlier this month I was in the Scottish Parliament to drum up attendance from MSPs for our reception. I also spoke out at the meeting of the Cross-Party Group on Construction about the value of local building contractors to Scotland’s economy and the role FMB plays in championing them.
