Essex homeowners are keeping the British tradition of builder hospitality alive – with more than two thirds (68%) offering tradespeople a cup of tea, according to new research by the Federation of Master Builders (FMB).

This is significantly higher than the national average – with the East of England topping the table when it comes to offering their builder a brew.

Nationally, the FMB revealed 42% of homeowners don't offer their builder a hot drink, a figure that prompted the construction industry to highlight the importance of small acts of kindness during the busy spring building season.

FMB member Simon Domakin, of Woodstone Homes in Chelmsford, said:

"In our trade, if you turn up to a job and no one offers you a brew, we call it a dry job – and nobody wants a dry job. Tea keeps the team going, but more than that, it sets the tone for the whole relationship."

Nicola De Sousa, FMB Regional Director, added:

"Essex people are so warm and welcoming. A cup of tea might seem like a small thing, but it makes a huge difference to a builder's day – it's a lovely tradition and one we hope more homeowners will keep alive."
