I recently met with Brittany Claxton, Learning Manager for Construction Skills and Built Environment at Bournemouth & Poole College, as they’ve just joined the FMB as an Associate Member. I was able to learn more about their offer, see one of the campuses and speak with some of their apprentices. We also chatted about ways that Master Builders could help Brittany and the college to develop and deliver courses which meet the needs of the industry.
Building the Future: Construction Education at Bournemouth & Poole College
Brittany told me: 'At Bournemouth & Poole College, we are proud to offer a diverse range of courses in construction and building services. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to access quality education and learn a trade, regardless of their background.
'Whether a student is just starting out or looking to advance their skills, our programmes support every step of the journey—from entry-level courses to apprenticeships, and on to higher education with Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications in Quantity Surveying and Site Management.
'Our mission is to equip students with the practical skills, technical knowledge, and professional behaviours needed to succeed in the industry. We are committed to producing work-ready college leavers who strive for excellence and deliver outstanding customer service.
'Traditionally, construction within Further Education has not always received the attention it deserves. But with growing skills shortages across the sector, this is changing rapidly. At Bournemouth & Poole College, we are playing an active role in this transformation.
'We recognise the importance of collaborating closely with employers to ensure our curriculum reflects real industry needs. By involving local businesses in course development and delivery, we can provide a well-rounded education that meets both learner aspirations and workforce demands.
'Together, we can shape the future of construction—one student at a time.'
How can you help?
Brittany’s created a short survey which she’d love as many members as possible to complete it, especially those based near the college or who are already using the college for training / apprenticeships. If you’ve thoughts on how the college could better support FMB members, from helping with apprenticeships through to designing courses based on specific regional skills, needs and professional behaviours, then please spend a few minutes completing the survey which you can access via: https://forms.office.com/e/CK5A8SC9vX?origin=lprLink
