London Director Sam Eden caught up with FMB member Safet Mustafaj from S & M Solutions Ltd about how they have embraced a range of technologies into their business, and he’s already seeing the benefits.

Question: What kind of construction work does your company complete?

At S & M Solutions Ltd, we specialise in a wide range of construction projects dominated by residential buildings, renovations, extensions, and remodelling, including, occasionally, the commercial sector. In addition, our expertise covers interior and exterior work, ensuring that we can meet the diverse needs of our clients.

Question: How have you integrated technology into your organisation?

We have embraced technology as a fundamental part of our construction process. We leverage various digital tools and software solutions, from project management to on-site operations. For example, we utilise project management software for efficient scheduling, cost-tracking, estimating and collaboration among team members. Additionally, we employ advanced construction equipment and machinery that enhance productivity and safety.

Question: What were the key challenges in introducing tech, and how did you overcome them?

Introducing technology in a traditionally hands-on industry did present some challenges. One of the critical obstacles was resistance to change from some team members who were not keen on the new technologies. To overcome this, we conducted comprehensive training sessions and highlighted the benefits of technology, emphasising how it streamlines processes, improves accuracy, and ultimately enhances our work quality. We also ensured ongoing support and assistance to address any concerns or difficulties during the transition phase.

Question: What advice would you give other master builders?

My advice to other master builders would be to embrace technology as a powerful tool to drive efficiency and competitiveness in the construction industry. Stay informed about emerging technologies, attend industry conferences and workshops, and invest in training for your team. It's vital to foster a culture that encourages innovation and continuous improvement. We must remember that technology is not a replacement for skilled craftsmanship but rather a complementary asset that can elevate the quality and speed of construction projects.

Question: What do you feel is the next important step in construction technology?

The next important step in construction technology is the widespread adoption of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and virtual reality (VR) technologies. BIM allows for creating accurate 3D models that enable better coordination, clash detection, and visualization of construction projects. VR technology provides:

  • Immersive experiences.
  • Allowing clients to walk through buildings before they are even constructed.
  • Facilitating better design decisions and reducing errors.

These advancements could revolutionise the construction industry by improving communication, minimizing rework, and maximizing efficiency. No one likes making snagging lists, so any technology designed to reduce wasted time and effort is very much welcome.
