The FMB is run by members for members: this is in our DNA. Our voice is so much stronger when members are able to give up their precious time and share insights and experiences.

The FMB supports members in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and across the English regions. At the UK level, the FMB is governed by an elected, all-member Board of Directors, with day-to-day management delegated to the Senior Management Team.

Wherever you are based, there is an FMB Area Board which meets regularly to discuss experiences and challenges in the building industry at a regional level. Your Area Board is made up of FMB members and makes recommendations on how the FMB can best support all members.

Why does this matter to me?

Without members seeking to get involved in their Area Boards, the FMB would lose this critical connection to members across the UK. By joining your Area Board, you benefit by growing your business network and sharing best practice with like-minded building companies.

It is great to meet to share ideas and discuss problems with fellow builders across Scotland. I’m a sole trader but my voice is of equal value to everyone else’s around the table. So come on, step up and get involved in your local FMB board: you are not just a member; you are part of a community influencing the future of the building industry.”

Stephen O’Neill, Vice President of the Scotland board

Ok, so how can I get onto my Area Board?

When the nomination process in your region opens, just put yourself forward as a candidate to join your FMB Area Board. Details on when this happens and how to do this will be sent to you via email and shared in the community section on the FMB App. Feel free to speak with your local FMB Regional Director — they are all on hand to help.

What if I don’t want to join my Area Board, can I still have a say?

Yes you can. If you don't want to put yourself forward as a candidate to join your Area Board, you can still help by casting your votes online for your preferred candidates after the nomination process has closed.

Simply vote in advance of your region’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) using the FMB's online voting site. Voting is quick and easy and the nomination timetable (for members to join their Area Board) will dictate when the voting process opens in your region or nation.

The table below has the dates of all the regional AGMs in 2026. We would love to see you at your regional AGM. Just contact your local FMB Director for further details.

If you are based in North England, change is afoot

The FMB Board voted in favour of a joint motion from Northern Counties Area Boad, North-West Area Board, and the Yorkshire & Trent Area Board to dissolve the three existing area boards and to establish two new area boards to be known as North-West and North-East.

All members in northern England are encouraged to apply to join their two new Area Boards. There will be an online briefing later in the year for members in northern England on the timings.
