The importance of HSE inspections

The Health and Safety Executive's (HSE) latest campaign on preventing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the construction sector is a commendable initiative.

HSE inspections are essential for ensuring that construction sites adhere to safety standards, thereby reducing the risk of MSDs among workers. These disorders not only affect the health and well-being of the workforce but also have a significant impact on productivity. Therefore, the HSE's proactive steps to address this issue are highly welcome.

The gap in CITB funding

One of the frustrations expressed by our members is the lack of basic manual handling training in the scope of Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) funded courses. While there are some exceptions, such as the "Roof Loading and Manual Handling" standard, a more generic manual handling course is notably absent from CITB's grant-aided programmes. This is disappointing, given that manual handling is a fundamental aspect of construction work.

Limited support for first aid training

Similarly, first aid training is generally not CITB grant-aided, except for non-levy payers who can access funding. While this is a step in the right direction, it still leaves a gap in the training needs for many small businesses.

Learning from Lincolnshire's success

The CITB Employer Network pilot in Lincolnshire** offers a shining example of how tailored training and streamlined support can make a difference. It shows that with the right support, even firms with limited resources can meet standards.

The director's role for health and safety

For those in leadership positions, the CITB offers a one-day course on the Director's Role for Health and Safety. This course is designed to educate company directors and senior managers on their duties regarding health and safety, the implications of non-compliance, and how to promote a positive organisational culture for health and safety. If you haven't already, I strongly encourage our members to consider taking this course. It's an investment in both your company's safety and its future.

A call for more comprehensive training

It's time for the CITB to reconsider its funding priorities. Small construction firms need more than just specialised training; they need foundational courses that cover the basics of manual handling and first aid. These are not just "nice-to-haves"; they are essential for the safety and well-being of our workforce.

While inspections are vital for maintaining industry standards, they must be balanced with adequate support and training opportunities for small construction firms. Let's work together to ensure that every construction worker goes home safely at the end of the day.
