Mark Billau (Associate Public Health Practitioner) and Louise McEvoy (Advanced Public Health Practitioner) from Worcestershire County Council delivered an engaging online webinar for members on 10 June 2022. The webinar was a follow-up to last month's suicide awareness session.

Suicide prevention is a massive concern for all of us at the FMB. Between 2018 and 2020, suicides in Hereford and Worcestershire numbered 228;, which is shocking! Of that number, 164 deaths were men aged under 25, constituting almost 73% of the fatalities (figures reported by Worcestershire County Council).

The Orange button scheme

The Orange Button community scheme is a way of identifying people that have undertaken mental health and suicide prevention training, helping to make them more visible to those who need support.

Wearing a distinctive orange button is a way of showing that you are comfortable with hearing the word suicide and can listen without judgement, informing people where to find help and support.

Mental health first-aiders have:

  1. An in-depth understanding of mental health and factors that can affect wellbeing.
  2. Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues.
  3. Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress.
  4. Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening.
  5. Knowledge to help some recover their health by guiding them to support further.

More information can be found on the Worcestershire County Council website.
